Air conditioning installationfor homes in Bournemouthand across Dorset

A cool bedroom on a hot night, a comfortable home office in August and a quiet, efficient heat source in winter. Domestic installation from a two-person team, with the manufacturer's warranty on new equipment.

Overview

What a home air conditioning installation involves

A domestic split air conditioning system has two parts: a slim indoor unit mounted high on a wall, and an outdoor condenser fixed to a wall bracket or ground stand. The two are joined by insulated copper refrigerant pipework, a power and communication cable and a condensate drain. Installing one properly means choosing the right capacity for the room, routing that pipework neatly, and commissioning the system so it runs efficiently from day one.

Our installations are for homeowners across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset and Hampshire coast. This service can suit homes with an overheating south-facing bedroom, a loft conversion that overheats every summer, a home office that makes video calls unbearable from June onwards, or a conservatory that is only usable for a few months of the year.

Overheating bedrooms or rooms that become uncomfortable during a heatwave can prompt homeowners to consider air conditioning. The best time to install is before that happens. Booking a survey early gives more time to plan; installation dates depend on our diary and equipment availability.

Professional installation matters because air conditioning is a sealed refrigerant system. Pipe joints have to be made cleanly, the system has to be pressure tested and evacuated before refrigerant is released, and the unit has to be sized for the room. Get any of these wrong and you get poor cooling, high running costs, noise, water leaks or an early failure. Done properly, a well-installed system can run quietly and efficiently for well over a decade.

What's at stake

What happens when installation is rushed or skipped

Poor sizing or installation can affect comfort, efficiency and reliability. Potential problems include the following.

Rooms that stay unusable

Top-floor bedrooms and lofts can become uncomfortably warm during hot weather, affecting sleep and how the rooms are used.

Undersized or oversized units

A unit that is too small runs flat out and never reaches temperature. One that is too big short-cycles, wastes energy and leaves the air clammy. Both shorten the life of the compressor.

Leaks and water damage

Poorly flared pipe joints leak refrigerant slowly, and badly falling condensate drains can drip down internal walls. Both problems are often hidden until the system stops working or a ceiling stains.

Portable units that don't solve the problem

Portable air conditioners vent hot air through a hose in an open window, are loud and use a lot of electricity for little cooling. Many homeowners buy one, then pay again for a proper split system.

Common mistakes homeowners make

  • ✕Choosing a unit by price or brand alone without a survey of the room, its windows and its heat gains.
  • ✕Placing the outdoor unit where it disturbs neighbours, blocks a path or can't breathe properly.
  • ✕Accepting long, untidy pipe runs that are clipped across the front of the house.
  • ✕Leaving it until a heatwave, when lead times are longest and rooms are already overheating.

Benefits

What you get from doing it properly.

Fast relief

A suitably sized inverter split system can help bring a warm bedroom to a more comfortable temperature. Cooling time depends on the room and conditions.

Safe, tidy fitting

Units are fixed securely, electrics are connected correctly and pipework is sealed and insulated, to reduce the risk of leaks and vibration.

Longer system life

Correct sizing, clean joints and proper evacuation protect the compressor, the most expensive part of the system.

Lower running costs

A correctly sized modern inverter unit only uses the power it needs, and can also heat the room more efficiently than an electric heater.

Reliable all year

The same system cools in summer and heats in winter, so you get value from it in every season, not just a few hot weeks.

Peace of mind

Servicing and maintenance are available after installation, and new equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty.

In detail

Home air conditioning installation explained

Equipment and materials

Modern domestic split systems use inverter-driven compressors, which vary their speed to match demand rather than switching on and off. Most current models run on R32 refrigerant, which has a lower environmental impact than older refrigerants and transfers heat efficiently. Efficiency is rated by SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating; the higher the figure, the less electricity the unit uses for the same comfort.

The indoor and outdoor units are joined with insulated copper pipework, flared or brazed at the joints, and a communication cable. Pipework can be hidden inside walls, run through loft spaces or enclosed in neat white trunking on external walls. Condensate from the indoor unit is drained by gravity to a suitable outlet, or by a small, quiet pump where gravity isn't possible.

How we install

We start by marking the indoor unit position high on the wall where air can circulate across the room without blowing directly onto the bed or desk. A core hole is drilled through the wall with a slight fall to the outside, the pipework and drain are passed through, and the outdoor unit is mounted on anti-vibration feet or brackets to keep noise down.

Before any refrigerant is released, the pipework is pressure tested with oxygen-free nitrogen to prove there are no leaks, then evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture. Only then is the system opened, charged where pipe lengths require it, and run in cooling and heating mode while we check temperatures and pressures.

Single-split, multi-split and wall-mounted options

A single-split system is one indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit, ideal for one bedroom, office or living room. A multi-split runs two or more indoor units from a single outdoor unit, so you can cool several rooms independently without a row of condensers on the outside of the house.

Most homes use high-wall indoor units because they are slim, quiet and easy to service. Where a wall isn't suitable, floor-standing consoles can work in conservatories and under windows. During your survey we explain which style fits each room and why.

Rooms and homes we install in

Common installations include main bedrooms, children's rooms, loft conversions, home offices, living rooms, garden rooms and conservatories. Flats, bungalows, terraces and detached houses each have different pipe-route and outdoor-unit options, which is why every quote follows a site survey.

We work only in people's homes. That focus means our methods, equipment choices and standards of finish are all built around domestic rooms, families and neighbours, from keeping outdoor units quiet to protecting carpets and furniture while we work.

Where we work

We cover homes across Dorset and Hampshire, including Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, Ferndown, Wimborne Minster, Ringwood, New Milton, Lymington and Dorchester. See air conditioning service areas, book a free air conditioning survey, or go back to the homepage.
