Air conditioning servicingfor homes in Bournemouthand across Dorset

Routine inspection, cleaning and performance checks for domestic air conditioning. Servicing can help identify wear, drainage problems and changes in performance.

Overview

What an air conditioning service involves

A service is a planned visit where we clean and inspect your indoor and outdoor units and check that the system is performing as it should. It covers filters, the indoor coil, the fan, the condensate tray and drain, the outdoor coil and fan, electrical connections, and the system's operating temperatures in cooling and heating.

It's for any homeowner with a split air conditioning system, whether we installed it or someone else did. If your system cools a bedroom, office, living room or conservatory, it benefits from regular servicing just like a boiler or car.

Most domestic systems should be serviced once a year, ideally in spring before heavy summer use. Book sooner if you notice weaker airflow, a musty smell when the unit starts, water dripping from the indoor unit, unusual noises or higher electricity bills.

Professional servicing goes further than cleaning a filter. Coils, fans and drains need the right cleaners and tools, and checking performance means measuring temperatures and looking for early signs of leaks or electrical wear. That's what keeps a system efficient and protects the manufacturer's warranty conditions where servicing is required.

What's at stake

What happens when servicing is skipped

An unserviced system doesn't usually fail overnight. It slowly gets worse, more expensive to run and less pleasant to live with.

Falling performance

Dust-clogged filters and coils restrict airflow, so the room takes longer to cool and the unit runs harder to get there.

Smells and poor air

Dirt and moisture in the indoor unit can lead to musty odours and mould growth, blown straight into the room.

Water leaks

Blocked condensate trays and drains overflow, causing drips down walls and onto floors or furniture.

Costly breakdowns

Overworked fans and compressors fail sooner. A compressor fault is the most expensive repair a split system can have.

Common mistakes homeowners make

  • ✕Only cleaning the filter and assuming the system is serviced.
  • ✕Spraying household cleaners into the indoor unit, which can damage coils and leave residues.
  • ✕Waiting for the first heatwave to discover the system isn't working.
  • ✕Ignoring a small drip or new noise until it becomes a bigger problem.

Our process

How the job runs, step by step.

  1. Step 1

    Initial check

We run the system and note airflow, noise, temperatures and any error codes.

  2. Step 2

    Indoor clean

Filters, coil, fan and condensate tray are cleaned with suitable products.

  3. Step 3

    Outdoor clean

The outdoor coil and fan are cleared of dust, leaves and debris, and fixings checked.

  4. Step 4

    Performance tests

We check drain flow, electrical connections and temperatures in cooling and heating.

  5. Step 5

    Report

We explain what we found, anything that needs attention and when the next service is due.

Benefits

What you get from doing it properly.

Faster cooling

Clean filters and coils move more air, so rooms reach temperature more quickly.

Safer operation

Electrical connections are checked and tightened, and condensate drains are cleared to prevent leaks.

Longer system life

Fans and compressors under less strain last longer, delaying replacement.

Lower bills

A clean, well-performing system uses less electricity for the same comfort.

Fewer breakdowns

Servicing can help identify signs of wear or leaks, but cannot prevent every breakdown.

Peace of mind

We explain the checks carried out and any issues that need attention.

In detail

Air conditioning servicing explained

What we clean and why

Indoor filters trap dust and fibres but quickly clog, especially in homes with pets. Behind them the evaporator coil collects fine dust that filters miss; when it's dirty it can't absorb heat properly, and moisture on the coil can encourage mould. We clean both with products suitable for HVAC coils.

The fan in the indoor unit (a long barrel-shaped blower) builds up dirt that reduces airflow and can cause noise. Outdoors, the condenser coil collects dust, pollen, leaves and, near the coast, salt deposits. Keeping it clear helps the system reject heat efficiently.

Checks and measurements

We check the condensate tray and drain line run freely, and test any condensate pump. Electrical terminals are inspected for heat damage or looseness. We look at pipe insulation and joints for signs of oil staining, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.

With the system running we measure supply and return air temperatures to confirm cooling and heating performance, and check that the outdoor unit is operating normally. Any readings outside normal ranges are explained with recommended next steps.

Types of service

A standard annual service suits most homes. Systems in dusty environments, homes with pets, or those running most of the year may benefit from more frequent visits. Units close to the sea can need more attention to outdoor coil condition.

For homes with several indoor units, each unit is cleaned and checked individually, and the shared outdoor unit is serviced as part of the same visit.

Who we service for

We service domestic split and multi-split systems in houses, bungalows and flats. Whether your system was fitted by us or by another installer, we can service it.

We work only in homes, across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset and Hampshire area.

Signs your system is due a service

Some signs are obvious, others creep up slowly. The most common is airflow that feels weaker than it did when the system was new, or a room that takes noticeably longer to reach the set temperature. A musty or damp smell when the unit first starts is another clear sign that the indoor coil and fan need attention, because dust and moisture are sitting where air passes through.

Listen and look as well. A new rattle, a whistle from the indoor unit, water marks on the wall below it, ice on the pipework or an error light on the front panel all suggest the system should be checked. So does an electricity bill that rises without any change in how you use the system. If any of these sound familiar, book a service before the busy summer months rather than waiting for the system to stop altogether. Catching a blocked drain or dirty coil early is a short, inexpensive visit; leaving it can mean a leak, a damaged ceiling or a compressor working itself to an early failure.

Working with us

What to expect when you book air conditioning servicing.

South Coast Air Con Ltd operates as a two-person team specialising in domestic air conditioning. We offer free surveys and quotes for new installations, followed by installation and handover. Servicing and maintenance are available afterwards.

We arrange a time that suits you, seven days a week between 8am and 5pm, including weekends. That makes it easier to book a visit without taking time off work. Before we start, we'll walk you through what we're going to do, where we'll be working and how long it should take.

Our aim is careful workmanship suited to your home. During the survey, we discuss where equipment and pipework can go. Installation includes testing the system and explaining how to use it at handover.

Clear prices, simple payment

For new installations the site survey and quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead. We provide a written quote so you can review the proposed work and price. You can pay by bank transfer or by card through payment links from Tide or our accounting software.

Homes only, by choice

We only work in people's homes. That focus shapes everything: quiet unit choices for bedrooms, tidy pipe routes that respect how your house looks, outdoor positions that take your neighbours into account, and advice based on how families actually use their rooms.

Aftercare that continues

Air conditioning works best when it's looked after. Once your job is complete, servicing and maintenance are available. New equipment comes with the manufacturer's warranty, and we'll explain the terms for the equipment you choose.
