Multi-split air conditioningfor whole homes in Bournemouth

Cool or heat several rooms independently from a single outdoor unit. Fewer condensers on your walls, one system to service, and every room at the temperature you choose.

Overview

What a multi-split system is and when it makes sense

A multi-split system connects two or more indoor units to one outdoor unit. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so you can cool the bedrooms at night while the living room is off, or warm the office in the morning without heating the whole house.

It suits homeowners who want comfort in several rooms: families with three bedrooms upstairs, households with a home office and a lounge that both overheat, or anyone who would rather have one neat outdoor unit than three or four on the side of the house.

You need one when more than one room is uncomfortable, when wall space outside is limited, or when planning rules, neighbours or appearance make several outdoor units impractical. It's also worth considering at the start of a renovation or loft conversion, when pipework can be hidden easily.

Multi-splits are more involved than single systems. Total indoor capacity must match what the outdoor unit can support, pipe lengths to each room have limits, and every circuit has to be pressure tested and evacuated. Professional design and installation is what makes the difference between a balanced system and one where some rooms never get comfortable.

What's at stake

The cost of getting multi-room cooling wrong

Multi-room comfort can be done well or badly. These are the issues that cost homeowners the most.

Unbalanced rooms

If indoor units are oversized for the outdoor unit, or pipe runs are too long, some rooms struggle to reach temperature on the hottest days.

Cluttered exterior

Fitting several separate systems without a plan can leave a row of condensers and pipework across the back of the house.

Higher long-term costs

Poor design leads to systems that run harder than they need to, increasing electricity bills and wear on the compressor.

Disruption later

Adding rooms piecemeal over the years often means more drilling, more trunking and more visits than doing it once properly.

Common mistakes homeowners make

  • ✕Choosing indoor unit sizes room by room without checking the outdoor unit's total capacity.
  • ✕Ignoring maximum pipe lengths and height differences between units.
  • ✕Not planning pipe routes before decorating or finishing a renovation.
  • ✕Assuming a multi-split is always cheaper than separate single-splits; sometimes it isn't, and a survey will show which is better.

Our process

How the job runs, step by step.

  1. Step 1

    Whole-home survey

We look at every room you want covered, possible pipe routes and the best outdoor unit location.

  2. Step 2

    System design

We match indoor unit capacities to each room and to a suitable outdoor unit, within pipe-length limits.

  3. Step 3

    Installation

Indoor units, branch pipework, cabling and drains are installed and routed as discreetly as possible.

  4. Step 4

    Testing every circuit

Each circuit is nitrogen pressure tested and evacuated before the system is charged and commissioned.

  5. Step 5

    Handover

We set up each room's controls, show you filter care and explain the manufacturer's warranty and any registration requirements.

Benefits

What you get from doing it properly.

One installation

All the rooms you want covered are done in one planned job, rather than separate visits over several years.

Safe, secure fitting

One correctly mounted outdoor unit, sealed pipework and correctly connected electrics.

Long service life

A balanced design means no indoor unit is starved and the compressor isn't overworked.

Efficient running

Inverter outdoor units adjust output to how many rooms are calling, so you only pay for what you use.

Room-by-room control

Every room has its own remote or app setting, so each person can choose their own temperature.

Peace of mind

One team designs, fits and services the whole system, backed by the manufacturer's warranty.

Equipment

A multi-split outdoor unit has multiple refrigerant connections, typically supporting two to five indoor units depending on the model. Indoor units can be mixed in size and style, so a small bedroom and a large lounge can each get the right capacity.

Systems use insulated copper pipework, interconnecting cables and individual condensate drains for each indoor unit. Current models generally use R32 refrigerant and inverter compressors, with SEER and SCOP ratings showing cooling and heating efficiency.

Design and installation method

Design starts with the heat load of each room. We then check that the combined indoor capacity suits the outdoor unit and that each pipe run stays within the manufacturer's maximum length and height difference.

Pipework is usually routed through lofts, voids or neat external trunking to a single outdoor position. Every circuit is pressure tested with nitrogen and evacuated under vacuum. We then commission the system and check each room in cooling and heating.

Multi-split vs several single-splits

A multi-split means one outdoor unit and a tidier exterior. Separate single-splits mean each room is fully independent, so a fault on one doesn't affect the others, and pipe runs can be shorter.

Neither is right for every home. During your survey we'll explain the trade-offs for your layout, budget and future plans so you can decide with the full picture.

Homes that suit multi-splits

Multi-splits suit family homes with several bedrooms, houses with limited outdoor wall space, properties in quiet residential streets where one outdoor unit is preferable, and homes undergoing loft conversions or extensions.

We install multi-split systems in homes across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wimborne Minster and the wider Dorset and Hampshire area. We work only in domestic properties.

Planning ahead for future rooms

Many homeowners start by cooling two rooms and later wish they'd included a third. If you think you might convert the loft, add an extension or turn a spare bedroom into an office, tell us at the survey. Some outdoor units have spare connections and capacity that allow another indoor unit to be added later without replacing the whole system. Choosing that option at the start costs far less than changing the outdoor unit in a few years' time.

Planning also makes pipework neater. If a renovation is under way, pipes can be run inside walls and floors before plastering and decorating, leaving nothing visible but the indoor units themselves.

Working with us

What to expect when you book multi-split system installation.

South Coast Air Con Ltd operates as a two-person team specialising in domestic air conditioning. We offer free surveys and quotes for new installations, followed by installation and handover. Servicing and maintenance are available afterwards.

We arrange a time that suits you, seven days a week between 8am and 5pm, including weekends. That makes it easier to book a visit without taking time off work. Before we start, we'll walk you through what we're going to do, where we'll be working and how long it should take.

Our aim is careful workmanship suited to your home. During the survey, we discuss where equipment and pipework can go. Installation includes testing the system and explaining how to use it at handover.

Clear prices, simple payment

For new installations the site survey and quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead. We provide a written quote so you can review the proposed work and price. You can pay by bank transfer or by card through payment links from Tide or our accounting software.

Homes only, by choice

We only work in people's homes. That focus shapes everything: quiet unit choices for bedrooms, tidy pipe routes that respect how your house looks, outdoor positions that take your neighbours into account, and advice based on how families actually use their rooms.

Aftercare that continues

Air conditioning works best when it's looked after. Once your job is complete, servicing and maintenance are available. New equipment comes with the manufacturer's warranty, and we'll explain the terms for the equipment you choose.
