Overview
Why bedrooms and lofts need special attention
Bedrooms and loft rooms are often the hottest rooms in the house. Heat rises, roofs absorb sun all day, and Velux-style windows let in a lot of solar gain. By bedtime these rooms can be several degrees warmer than downstairs.
This service is for homeowners who struggle to sleep in summer, parents of children who wake up hot, and anyone with a loft conversion that's too warm to use from late spring to early autumn.
You need it when fans and open windows aren't enough, when outside noise or security makes sleeping with windows open unattractive, or when a loft room you've invested in sits empty for half the year.
Bedrooms need quiet units positioned carefully so air doesn't blow onto the bed. Lofts need careful pipe routes through eaves and roof spaces. A survey helps plan suitable equipment positions and pipe routes.
What's at stake
What a hot bedroom costs you
Warm bedrooms affect more than comfort. Potential difficulties include the following.
Broken sleep
An uncomfortably warm bedroom can make it harder to sleep during warm spells.
Unusable loft space
Loft conversions are expensive. If they're too hot to use, that investment sits idle for months.
Open-window problems
Leaving windows open brings in noise, insects and security worries, often without much cooling.
Noisy fans and portables
Fans and portable air conditioners make noise right beside the bed and move warm air around.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- ✕Mounting the indoor unit directly above or facing the bed.
- ✕Choosing a unit without a quiet night mode.
- ✕Ignoring how pipework will reach the outdoor unit from a loft.
- ✕Buying an undersized unit for a loft with large roof windows.

Long-lasting comfort

Usable all year
The same unit heats loft rooms efficiently in winter.

Equipment choices
High-wall split units are usually best for bedrooms: slim, quiet and placed out of the way. Look for low sound levels on the quietest fan speed and a sleep mode that gradually adjusts temperature through the night.
Lofts with sloping ceilings may have limited high wall space; gable walls or knee walls often provide a good position, and floor consoles can work where wall space is tight.
Installation method
In bedrooms we position the indoor unit so airflow sweeps the room rather than hitting the bed directly. Pipework is kept as short as possible, ideally straight through an external wall to the outdoor unit.
In lofts, pipework may run through eaves, roof voids or down the outside of the building in neat trunking. Condensate drainage needs a correct fall or a quiet condensate pump. Every system is pressure tested and evacuated before use.
Single rooms or several bedrooms
One bedroom suits a single-split system. Several bedrooms can use a multi-split, running each bedroom's indoor unit from one outdoor unit.
We'll explain the options for your layout during the free survey.

Getting a good night's sleep with air conditioning
Choose a temperature that feels comfortable for you and follow the equipment instructions. Cooling the room before bedtime and using a timer or sleep mode, where available, can help manage comfort overnight. Settings depend on the room, equipment and personal preference.
Point the louvres so air flows across the ceiling and down the walls rather than directly at the bed, and choose the lowest fan speed that keeps you comfortable. Keep blinds or curtains closed during the day on south and west-facing windows to reduce how much heat builds up before evening. In loft rooms with roof windows, external blinds or reflective film can make a noticeable difference alongside air conditioning. During the survey we'll suggest the settings and position that suit your room and the way you sleep. Children's rooms and nurseries benefit in the same way, with a steady temperature that doesn't swing between too hot and too cold.
Because the same unit can also heat, loft bedrooms that feel cold and draughty in January can be brought up to a comfortable temperature quickly too, without relying on plug-in heaters beside the bed. That makes a loft conversion a genuinely usable bedroom in every season, not just a storage room for the warmer months.

Working with us
What to expect when you book bedroom & loft air conditioning.
South Coast Air Con Ltd operates as a two-person team specialising in domestic air conditioning. We offer free surveys and quotes for new installations, followed by installation and handover. Servicing and maintenance are available afterwards.
We arrange a time that suits you, seven days a week between 8am and 5pm, including weekends. That makes it easier to book a visit without taking time off work. Before we start, we'll walk you through what we're going to do, where we'll be working and how long it should take.
Our aim is careful workmanship suited to your home. During the survey, we discuss where equipment and pipework can go. Installation includes testing the system and explaining how to use it at handover.
Clear prices, simple payment
For new installations the site survey and quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead. We provide a written quote so you can review the proposed work and price. You can pay by bank transfer or by card through payment links from Tide or our accounting software.
Homes only, by choice
We only work in people's homes. That focus shapes everything: quiet unit choices for bedrooms, tidy pipe routes that respect how your house looks, outdoor positions that take your neighbours into account, and advice based on how families actually use their rooms.
Aftercare that continues
Air conditioning works best when it's looked after. Once your job is complete, servicing and maintenance are available. New equipment comes with the manufacturer's warranty, and we'll explain the terms for the equipment you choose.
