Air conditioning maintenanceand aftercare across Dorset

Ongoing maintenance and aftercare can help your domestic air conditioning run efficiently and identify issues that need attention.

Overview

What maintenance and aftercare means

Maintenance is the ongoing care that keeps an air conditioning system in good condition between and beyond annual services. It includes scheduled servicing, checks on drainage and electrical connections, attention to anything that starts to change, and advice on how to get the best from your system.

It's for homeowners who want their system to just work. Whether you use air conditioning for summer cooling, year-round heating, or both, regular maintenance protects the investment you've made in your home.

Maintenance matters most once a system has been running for a season or more. Dust builds up, drains can slowly block, outdoor units collect debris, and small changes in performance creep in unnoticed. Regular attention catches these before they affect comfort.

Having a professional look after your system means problems are spotted by someone who knows what normal looks like. Our two-person team offers ongoing maintenance and aftercare for domestic systems.

What's at stake

What neglect does to an air conditioning system

Systems rarely fail without warning. The warning signs are just easy to miss without regular checks.

Gradual efficiency loss

Dirty coils and filters make the system work harder each year, pushing up bills without any obvious fault.

Hidden leaks

Slow refrigerant leaks reduce cooling and heating capacity and can eventually damage the compressor.

Drainage failures

Condensate drains block slowly, then overflow, often on the hottest day of the year when the system is working hardest.

Shorter lifespan

Components under constant strain wear out sooner, bringing forward the cost of a replacement system.

Common mistakes homeowners make

  • ✕Treating air conditioning as fit-and-forget.
  • ✕Running the system with filters that haven't been cleaned for months.
  • ✕Letting plants, bins or garden furniture crowd the outdoor unit.
  • ✕Ignoring error codes or flashing lights on the indoor unit.

Our process

How the job runs, step by step.

  1. Step 1

    System record

We ask about your equipment, its age and any known faults or previous maintenance.

  2. Step 2

    Scheduled visits

Regular servicing is planned at a time of year that suits how you use the system.

  3. Step 3

    Inspection

Each visit checks cleanliness, drainage, electrics, pipework and performance.

  4. Step 4

    Action & advice

Minor issues are dealt with; anything bigger is explained with clear options.

  5. Step 5

    Ongoing support

Between visits you can contact us with questions or concerns.

Benefits

What you get from doing it properly.

Quicker fixes

Problems found early are usually simpler and quicker to put right.

Safe operation

Electrical connections, fixings and drains are checked regularly.

Longer lifespan

Regular maintenance can help reduce wear. Equipment life depends on its condition, use and environment.

Lower running costs

Clean, correctly operating systems use less energy for the same comfort.

Dependable comfort

Fewer surprises when you need cooling or heating most.

Peace of mind

Advice on your system's condition and any maintenance it needs.

In detail

Maintenance in detail

What gets maintained

Indoor units: filters, evaporator coil, blower fan, condensate tray, drain line and any condensate pump. Outdoor units: condenser coil, fan, mounting brackets or stands, anti-vibration feet and electrical connections.

We also check pipe insulation, which degrades in sunlight over time, external trunking, and the condition of wall seals where pipes pass through.

How we approach it

Each visit starts by running the system and checking performance before anything is cleaned, so we can compare before and after. We then clean components, clear drains and check connections.

Temperature readings in cooling and heating show whether the system is delivering what it should. Signs such as oil staining at joints or ice on pipework can indicate refrigerant problems, which we'll explain and quote for separately if needed.

Maintenance for different systems

Single-split systems need one indoor and one outdoor unit maintaining. Multi-split systems have several indoor units sharing an outdoor unit, so each indoor unit is checked individually.

Systems used as heat pumps through winter work for more hours each year and benefit from closer attention. Outdoor units near the coast can be exposed to salt air and need their coils checked carefully.

Homes we look after

We maintain systems we've installed and systems fitted by other installers, as long as they are in domestic properties.

Our area covers Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, Ferndown, Wimborne Minster, Ringwood, New Milton, Lymington and Dorchester.

Simple things you can do between visits

Professional maintenance does the heavy lifting, but a few minutes of care between visits helps a lot. Most indoor units have filters that lift out from behind the front panel. In heavy summer use, rinse them under lukewarm water every few weeks, let them dry fully and refit them. Clean filters keep airflow strong, reduce strain on the fan and help the indoor coil stay clean for longer.

Outside, keep at least a small clear space around the outdoor unit. Trim back plants and shrubs, avoid stacking bins, bikes or garden furniture against it, and clear leaves from the top and sides in autumn. Never cover the unit while it's running. Inside, avoid blocking the airflow from the indoor unit with curtains or tall furniture. If you notice anything unusual, such as a drip, a smell, an odd noise or an error code, switch the system off and give us a call rather than resetting it repeatedly. Noting when the problem started and what you were doing at the time makes diagnosis quicker and often saves a second visit. These simple habits, combined with a yearly service, make the biggest difference to how long your system lasts and how much it costs to run.

Working with us

What to expect when you book maintenance & aftercare.

South Coast Air Con Ltd operates as a two-person team specialising in domestic air conditioning. We offer free surveys and quotes for new installations, followed by installation and handover. Servicing and maintenance are available afterwards.

We arrange a time that suits you, seven days a week between 8am and 5pm, including weekends. That makes it easier to book a visit without taking time off work. Before we start, we'll walk you through what we're going to do, where we'll be working and how long it should take.

Our aim is careful workmanship suited to your home. During the survey, we discuss where equipment and pipework can go. Installation includes testing the system and explaining how to use it at handover.

Clear prices, simple payment

For new installations the site survey and quote are free, with no obligation to go ahead. We provide a written quote so you can review the proposed work and price. You can pay by bank transfer or by card through payment links from Tide or our accounting software.

Homes only, by choice

We only work in people's homes. That focus shapes everything: quiet unit choices for bedrooms, tidy pipe routes that respect how your house looks, outdoor positions that take your neighbours into account, and advice based on how families actually use their rooms.

Aftercare that continues

Air conditioning works best when it's looked after. Once your job is complete, servicing and maintenance are available. New equipment comes with the manufacturer's warranty, and we'll explain the terms for the equipment you choose.

FAQs

Maintenance & Aftercare: common questions

How much does ongoing maintenance cost?+

It depends on the number of indoor units and how often visits are needed. We'll give you a clear price before anything is booked.

How often should my system be maintained?+

At least once a year for most homes; more often if it runs year-round or is in a dusty or coastal location.

What happens during a maintenance visit?+

We run the system, clean indoor and outdoor components, clear drains, check electrics and pipework, and test performance.

Does maintenance protect my warranty?+

Some manufacturer warranties require regular servicing. Keeping a record of maintenance helps you meet those terms.

How long will my system last with maintenance?+

Lifespan varies with the equipment, installation, usage, maintenance and environment. No fixed lifespan is guaranteed.

Are you available for emergencies?+

We're not a 24-hour service. We're open 8am–5pm, seven days a week on 07815 604730.

Can I clean the filters myself?+

Yes, and we'll show you how. Filters can be rinsed every few weeks in heavy use. Coils, fans and drains are best left to a professional.

Do you cover Ferndown and Wimborne?+

Yes, along with Bournemouth, Poole and across Dorset and Hampshire.
